US continues deployment of THAAD anti-missile defense system in SKorea

Parts of the U.S. THAAD anti-missile defense system are being moved into a deployment site in South Korea, according to a South Korea’s Yonhap news agency on April 26.

Trailer trucks transported parts of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system to a site in Seongju County, in a southern region of South Korea, said reports.

The United States and South Korea agreed to the deployment back in March in response to threats of missile launches from North Korea.

China is opposed to THAAD, saying it won’t deter the North and will destabilize the regional security balance. South Korea said that China has discriminated against its companies in retaliation to the deployment.

The U.S. military first started deploying it in March after North Korea test-launched four ballistic missiles.

Both U.S. and South Korean militaries have refrained from discussing the progress of the deployment. South Korea will have a presidential election on May 9, and candidates are still debating whether the deployment should be delayed until after the vote.
