For decades, the United States has limited its diplomats and officials from interacting with their Taiwanese counterparts to avoid provoking communist China. The United States is now lifting restrictions on officials making contact with their Taiwan counterparts.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in a statement, called the rules “an attempt to appease the communist regime in Beijing.” He announced that all such guidelines are now “null and void.”

Taiwan welcomed the move.

The Trump administration during its term ramped up arms sales to Taiwan to protect the island from Beijing’s aggression.
