Murders fell nearly 20 percent nationwide in the first 10 months of 2025, putting the United States on track for what analysts say could be the largest single-year decline ever recorded, <a href="https://realtimecrimeindex.com/">according to data</a> from the Real-Time Crime Index (RTIC).

The nationwide database, which tracks reported crimes from 570 law enforcement agencies, shows murders dropped 19.8 percent year-to-date through October. Cases fell from 7,369 in 2024 to 5,912 in 2025—a decrease of 1,457 lives lost. RTIC also reported significant declines across nearly every major crime category this year.

“The U.S. is on pace for the largest one-year drop in murders the nation has ever recorded,” crime statistics analyst Jeff Asher wrote on his Substack, <a href="https://jasher.substack.com/p/2025-year-in-review-a-remarkable">Jeff-alytics</a>.
<h2>Nationwide Crime Data</h2>
Violent crime overall fell 10.2 percent through October 2025, dropping from 501,281 incidents in 2024 to 450,186. Other violent crimes also declined: robbery down 18.3 percent, aggravated assault down 7.5 percent, and rape down 8.7 percent.

Property crime decreased 12.3 percent, with motor vehicle thefts down 23.2 percent, burglaries down 14.8 percent, and thefts down 8.9 percent.

Compared to 2023, the declines are even more dramatic: murders have plunged by more than 30 percent in two years, motor vehicle thefts have dropped by 37.1 percent, and robberies are down by 24 percent.
<h2>Major Cities See Sharp Declines</h2>
Several major cities have also seen significant declines in murder rates this year. Chicago reported 506 murders in 2024—the highest total among major U.S. cities—and experienced a 27.7 percent drop in 2025. Despite this progress, Chicago continues to have the highest murder rate of any major city in the report.

The data also shows that Washington, D.C., saw a 27.8 percent decline in murder rates, New York City dropped by 17.6 percent, Los Angeles County fell by 18.8 percent, and Memphis experienced nearly a 20 percent decrease. Detroit, Philadelphia, Houston, and New Orleans also recorded notable double-digit reductions.

According to the RTCI data collection process, crime counts are preliminary and may be updated as agencies submit late or revised reports. The most recent data for 2025 covers crimes reported through October.
<h2>Government Officials React</h2>
On Dec. 24, government officials commented on the decreasing crime numbers.

FBI Director Kash Patel <a href="https://x.com/FBIDirectorKash/status/2003854222425468936?s=20">posted</a>, “U.S. murders on pace for largest one-year drop on record - not an accident. [President Donald Trump’s] policy letting good cops be cops WORKS Lives being saved every single day under this administration with great local partners across the country. And more work to do.”

The Department of Homeland Security <a href="https://x.com/DHSgov/status/2003860598984172030?s=20">wrote</a> on X: “Here at DHS we’ve been operating by this radical idea that removing murderers from our country would bring down the murder rate. Who could have guessed it would work?”

Dan Bongino, Deputy Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, <a href="https://x.com/dbongino/status/2003825661656412613?s=20">posted</a>: “This is what happens when you mix a President with a vision of safer streets, with a team dedicated to implementing the vision. Talk is cheap, results matter.”
<h2>Nationwide Crime Reduction Initiatives</h2>
Since taking office in 2025, the Trump administration has placed law-and-order initiatives at the forefront of its nationwide crime reduction strategy.

Among the most visible actions, the administration deployed the National Guard to <a href="https://www.ntd.com/350-louisiana-national-guard-members-deploying-to-assist-law-enforcement-efforts_1115672.html">cities reporting</a> high crime rates, helping local law enforcement to combat violent crime and improve public safety.

Another focus of the strategy of the Trump administration has been increasing <a href="https://www.ntd.com/trump-invokes-1798-alien-enemies-act-orders-venezuelan-gang-members-quickly-deported_1054424.html">deportations</a> of illegal immigrants, an effort aimed at removing individuals who have committed serious crimes or are linked to criminal networks or terrorist groups.

The administration has also targeted criminal organizations and extremist groups. In February 2025, the Venezuelan criminal organization Tren de Aragua was <a href="https://www.ntd.com/us-designates-barrio-18-as-foreign-terrorist-organization-joining-tren-de-aragua-ms-13-others_1092457.html">designated</a> as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) for its role in transnational crime and violence.

In September 2025, Antifa was designated a domestic terrorist organization. It was <a href="https://www.congress.gov/119/bills/s2936/BILLS-119s2936is.htm">described</a> in its designation as “a militarist, anarchist enterprise that explicitly calls for the overthrow of the United States Government, law enforcement authorities, and our system of law. It uses illegal means to organize and execute a campaign of violence and terrorism nationwide to accomplish these goals.”

Law enforcement agencies have also made combating illegal drug trafficking and distribution a top priority, intercepting record-breaking quantities of narcotics attempting to enter the United States. For example, the U.S. Coast Guard, which typically seizes 167,000 pounds of cocaine annually, reported that seizures in fiscal year 2025 exceeded three times that figure, <a href="https://www.news.uscg.mil/Press-Releases/Article/4328665/coast-guard-sets-historic-record-with-amount-of-cocaine-seized-in-fy25/">according</a> to a November 2025 statement.
