US State Department on Detained WNBA Player

WNBA player Brittney Griner was arrested at a Moscow airport in mid-February after Russian authorities alleged they found cannabis oil in her luggage. Her case is still unresolved, and her detention has been extended to May 19. The U.S. Consulate visited Griner and reported she was in good shape.

The 31-year-old plays her off-seasons in Russia, where she earns in excess of a million dollars a season—roughly four times what she makes in the WNBA. The WNBA season is set to start on May 6.
