U.S. Vice President Mike Pence took a break from endless meetings with high-level diplomats to instead meet some of Australia’s iconic animals at Taronga Zoo on April 23.

Pence and his family petted a koala, and a spiny echidna, but stayed clear of a fierce-looking owl.

Pence’s wife fed an emu, and the whole family petted a kangaroo.

The vice president is on the final leg of a 10-day Asia trip. He has been discussing trade and defense with ministers and diplomats and national leaders.

Even a ferocious predator like an owl must have seemed tame by comparison.
