A Maryland hospital is under fire after a bystander took footage showing a woman who had apparently been discharged from the hospital wearing only a gown and socks.

The footage was posted to Facebook by Inamu Baraka, and shows an older black woman walking to a bus station with barely any clothing on in the context of the frigid winter night.

Baraka questions several people who appear to be workers at Baltimore’s University of Maryland Medical Center, chiding them for not helping the woman.

When no action is taken, he calls for help. He later said an ambulance came for the woman, who had sat down at a nearby bus stop and was crying.

“Is this what healthcare in Baltimore City has come to?” Baraka said on his Facebook page.

“I just witnessed this with my own eyes. I had no choice but to give this young lady a voice in this moment.

“University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus (UMMC) as a Doctor of Healthcare Administration (DHA) student—may I remind you of the importance of the VISION of your MEDICAL CENTER: ‘UMMC will be known for providing high value and compassionate care, improving health in Maryland and beyond, educating future health care leaders and discovering innovative ways to advance medicine worldwide.’ You can do better. You must do better.”

In a statement sent to the Associated Press, the hospital staff expressed “shock and disappointment” at what happened.

“This unfortunate event is not representative of our patient-centered mission,” the statement said. “While there are many circumstances of this patient’s case that we cannot address publicly, in the end, we clearly failed to fulfill our mission with this patient, no matter the circumstances of her case or the quality of the clinical care we provided in the hospital (which is not depicted in the video).”

Heather Mizeur, a former member of the state’s House of Delegates, shared the video on Facebook, saying: “I’m going to be on a holy reign of terror demanding some answers here.”
