Police in Henderson, Nevada, released the body camera video of an officer who fired at a vehicle that ran over his foot during a stop.

Larry Calvert, 27, was arrested for allegedly striking two officers with his car on Aug. 12, prompting the shooting. Calvert faces charges of battery with a deadly weapon against officers, said the police.

The police department released the body camera footage on Aug. 17.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that last night at approximately 8:10 p.m., a patrol officer contacted three subjects that were involved in suspicious activity in the 2600 block of Windmill Parkway. During the investigation, the suspects ignored the officer’s commands and an altercation ensued as a second officer arrived to assist,” according to the Henderson Police Department in a Facebook statement. “A male entered the driver’s side of a Toyota and a female had already been seated in the front passenger seat.”

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Calvert struck two officers and ran over an officer’s foot as he fled the scene with Levia in the vehicle. Another woman, 26-year-old Summer Waters, fled the scene on foot.

Police said that Calvert was hospitalized with two gunshot wounds, and Levia was also hit by Calvert’s car and sustained several injuries.

Marcella Levia, who had been present during the incident, was also located, according to the Review-Journal.

“Both Calvert and Levia subsequently exited the residence at which time it was discovered that Calvert suffered from at least two gunshot wounds, and that Levia had apparently been run over by Calvert during last night’s incident and was also injured. Both Calvert and Levia were transported to a local hospital to be treated for their injuries. As of this release, Calvert is in surgery and Levia is listed in stable condition,” said Henderson Police in a later statement.

Police are searching for Waters for questioning.

It was the first officer-involved shooting involving the Henderson Police Department in 2018, Fox5 reported.

The officer involved in the shooting is on paid leave pending the investigation.

Henderson, which has a population of more than 300,000, is located in the Las Vegas metropolitan area.

Traffic Stops Dangerous for Police

In early August, a video was released by police in Pennsylvania, showing a man opening fire on two officers. One of the officers was critically wounded in the incident.

The National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund (pdf) says traffic stops are notoriously dangerous for police officers in the United States. The leading causes for officers being shot and killed in 2017 occurred when they were responding to domestic incidents and while conducting traffic stops, the group’s annual report says.

“The leading circumstances of firearms-related fatalities were officers responding to domestic disturbances and conducting traffic stops,” the memorial fund says.

And, according to the most recent figures published by the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, “A greater percentage of male drivers (12 percent) than female drivers (8 percent) were stopped by police during 2011.” It adds: “In 2011, about 3 percent of traffic stops led to a search of the driver, the vehicle, or both. Police were more likely to search male drivers (4 percent) than female drivers (2 percent).”
