In Illinois, more than 100 people spent their Saturday morning doing something very meaningful–building a home for a local homeless veteran.
This is the second house built in the last month, which was funded through a grant from Home Depot. The last build was fully funded by donations.
According to the organizer, Marks Lawrence, the effort is 100 percent volunteer-driven, so the veteran is the only one benefiting from the project.
“The support we have from our community is just outstanding. This is what a community is about. It’s about people coming together to help those who are in need,” said Lawrence.
“It is unbelievable. The feeling is just amazing. I mean just seeing the individual that knows they’re going to have a home, a roof over their head after so much time of having struggles to make ends meet. They’ll have a roof that is permanent,” said Home Depot manager Mike Vorholt.
The house was completed on Veteran’s day, and the ribbon cutting is on Monday afternoon.
This is a project by the non-profit organization “2×4’s For Hope,” and three more houses for veterans are scheduled to be built.
