Watch the Incredible Power of a Controlled Avalanche in Juneau, Alaska

A huge powder cloud rose over Thane Road on the outskirts of Juneau, Alaska, on March 3 after avalanche control teams triggered a slide using a Korean War-era howitzer, according to reports.

Local newspaper The Juneau Empire reported that Thane Road was temporarily closed while the Alaska Department of Transport crew worked.

Elsewhere in the city, a natural avalanche swept down the Behrends Avenue chute towards homes in the downtown neighborhood but no damage was reported.

This dramatic video shows the avalanche sweeping towards the photographer.
