What’s Wrong in the State of California?

California Dreamin’ these days isn’t about becoming warm and safe in LA as the “Mammas and the Papas” sang about; it’s about leaving LA and elsewhere. Over the last two decades, California has seen a net loss of about 2.4-million-people, or 7% of the 2000 population, according to the Urban Reform Institute. And that doesn’t include the most recent COVID exodus. California also has the nation’s highest poverty rate. So what is happening in the Golden State?

Here to help us shed light on this question is Joel Kotkin. He’s the executive director of the Urban Reform Institute; Presidential Fellow in Urban Futures at Chapman University; and the author of many books including “The Coming of Neo-Feudalism: A Warning to the Global Middle Class.”
