Why Underwriters Laboratories beats your favorite products to smithereens

Underwriter Laboratories has been testing safety for 123 years. The UL mark appears on all kinds of products. They test TVs and household products, as well as high-tech products.

“Phones are within 15 or 20 centimeters of our body every day, whether we carry them in our pocket or purse. We are looking at how much radiation might somebody be subjected to. So we actually have a system where we can put a head, so to speak, in a test apparatus and measure where the radiation is. We can draw a three dimensional pattern of where the radiation might peak. Manufacturers of phones want to look at this. They want to see just what is going on and it gives them some idea of how they should design their phones,” said John Drengenberg, consumer safety director at Underwriters Laboratories.

The company has also been testing lithium batteries, like the ones that caused the recent phone explosion incidents.
