Why We Have the Electoral College

We take a look under the hood at a uniquely American institution—the Electoral College. It’s not well understood and it’s even less well understood why the Founding Fathers came up with it. And every time a candidate wins the Electoral College but loses the popular vote—such as George W. Bush in 2000 and Donald Trump in 2016—there are renewed calls to abolish it. We’re joined by M.A. Taylor, a filmmaker who just released a documentary called “Safeguard: An Electoral College Story” to help answer some of those questions.
