The wife of a Taiwanese human rights activist detained by Chinese authorities over allegations of harming national security, spoke out on Wednesday (March 29), saying that her husband is innocent and that she is concerned about how he is being treated.

Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO), told a news briefing in Beijing that Li Ming-che was being held in China and that “at present his health is good.”

Li Ching-yu released her comments at a news conference just hours after Beijing confirmed that her husband was in Chinese custody and being investigated on suspicion of harming national security. This was China’s first official response since Li’s disappearance 10 days ago after traveling to China.

Various organizers and supporters attended the news conference holding signs and chanting “release Li Ming-che.”

Li Ming-che is a community college worker known for supporting human rights in China and a former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) staff. He was traveling to China on personal matters related to his mother-in-law’s medical condition but disappeared on March 19 after entering China’s Zhuhai City from the Chinese territory of Macau.
