“The murder occurred on the 7500 block of Stagecoach yesterday. Dempsey and Saucedo are accused in the murder of Mary Dempsey, 53 years old,” police said in the statement.

Doug Greene, a spokesman for the San Antonio Police Department, told the New York Post that it was “a heartbreaking story.”

“To find out that it was the son of the victim involved in this, it’s just kind of hard to process, but the evidence shows otherwise and we have to go by the evidence,” Greene said.

According to court documents, the teens allegedly beat the 53-year-old and slit her throat after she walked in on them robbing her property, reported mySA.

Matthew allegedly confessed to murdering his mother with Saucedo’s help, according to Saucedo’s arrest affidavit. After allegedly slitting his mother’s throat, Matthew gave Saucedo a blanket from his mother’s room to cover the body.

The suspects then loaded stolen items into the victim’s car, which Saucedo used to flee the scene, the affidavit said, reported the news station. They also withdrew money from Dempsey’s account at an ATM.

Earlier authorities said investigators found “obvious trauma to the body” but did not confirm how the victim died.

According to another police statement, they were looking for the victim’s beige 2016 Honda Accord, which has since been located.

Neighbors told mySA that they heard gunshots on the evening of April 8 but they added that it was not uncommon in the area.

“If we don’t hear [police] helicopters at night, it’s unusual,” said Johnny Arredondo, who is currently running for City Council in District 4.

He added that drugs and robberies are also a common problem in the neighborhood.
