A woman gave birth to a baby girl on April 4 as she was rescued from the flooded region of Piura, in northern Peru.

Maria Pingo was rescued by troops on board a helicopter from the town of Nueva Esperanza. She gave birth as she was being flown to the Lambayeque Regional Hospital in Chiclayo.

Pingo’s relatives warned officials that she was to give birth soon, but authorities couldn’t find her location. The troops were able to find Pingo after her relatives lit a smoke signal.

Mother and daughter were stabilized at the hospital and are doing well, local media reported.

Floods and mudslides in Peru have killed more than 100 people and left tens of thousands homeless since the start of the year.

Much of the country’s infrastructure has been torn apart.

More than 800 towns and cities have declared a state of emergency, according to local media.

Scientists in Peru now expect the rainy weather, caused by a localized version of El Niño, to continue into May. However, April rains should not be as intense.
