A woodworker is honoring fallen officer and firefighters with his craft.

In Salt Lake City, Utah, Nate Eye makes wooden memorial badges of officers and firefighters to honor their services.

Beginning with blank wooden boards, it takes ten to twenty hours to transform them into wooden memorial badges.

“I feel like these families should have something to remember their service by,” said Eye. “Oftentimes I feel like they’re standing in the shop with me sometimes.”

Eye’s work also gives him a connection with his own father.

“He was a woodworker and so I guess I’m just trying to follow in his footsteps,” he said.

He doesn’t always know the people he’s creating the wooden badges for, but for him, interacting with their family is all he needs.

“It’s just an indescribable feeling. It’s a feeling of love, it’s a feeling of giving and it’s a humbling feeling,” said Eye. “I feel like if I can just do something for these families, maybe that might make a difference for them.”
