San Bernardino police say that the children injured at a school shooting were not the target.

Two adults were killed and two children were critically injured when shots were fired at North Park Elementary School in San Bernardino.

One of the children, 8-year-old Jonathan Martinez, later died in the hospital. The other child is in stable condition.

One of the deceased adults was a teacher at the school, identified as Karen Elaine Smith, 53. The other was the shooter, identified as Cedric Anderson, 53.

Smith was the estranged wife of Anderson.

Police say the incident appears to be a murder-suicide.

“The children we do not believe were targeted, the entire incident was limited to a single classroom on the school campus. The suspect had come to the classroom to visit. The female, the adult female that was in the classroom. We believe the two children were the unfortunate recipients of injuries by being in proximity to the female at the time of the incident,” said Police Captain Ron Maass of the San Bernardino Police Department.

Maass promised a “thorough investigation” into the shooting.

The wounded children are in being treated in hospitals.

All other students were evacuated to a nearby high school. The school serves about 600 students from kindergarten to sixth grade.

Police did not identify the shooter or the teacher.

They said the weapon was a handgun.

The relationship between the shooter and the teacher is still unclear.

Police are not yet releasing the names or ages of the injured students.

“I would like our community and our nation to keep our families in prayer. This is an absolutely tragic event. Our hearts are broken as is everyone else,” said Dale Marsden, Superintendent of the San Bernardino City Unified School District.
