A ferry leaving Puerta de la Luz in Spain’s Canary Islands lost power Saturday, April 22, and crashed into the dock, rupturing underwater fuel pipes.

The resulting oil slick has spread for two miles, threatening the island’s two major tourist towns.

Emergency response plans were ready and have been set into action to mitigate the damage caused by the huge slick.

Thirteen ferry passengers were injured; five had to be hospitalized.
