Male lions are commonly thought to be lazy and not good hunters, and there is some evidence to support that. In the pride it’s the lioness who hunts. The male generally just waits for dinner to be served to him, thou he does fight other male lions on occasion. Mostly though, he sleeps and preserves his energy. But male lions can hunt too, and in contrast to the cooperative female strategy, they tend to hunt alone. They are ambush predators – they lie in wait.
Sometimes during the long wait for the prey, with the intense heat, they can fall into a deep sleep, and so napping on the job can cost a big male lion an easy dinner.
