After being re-elected to head her political party, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has repeated calls to ban full facial veils, saying the Islamic garment is  quote “inappropriate in our country.”

Burqas “should be banned wherever legally possible. It does not belong in our country,” Merkel said in Essen at a party meeting of the Christian Democratic Union.

Merkel has led Germany for over ten years and is seeking reelection. Her approval rating dipped after the government-backed acceptance of over a million refugees from the Middle East and Africa resulted in increased crime and cultural discord. Rape and murder committed by some of the new arrivals has sparked outrage across the nation.

“In interpersonal communication, which plays a fundamental role here, we show our face. And that’s why a full veil is inappropriate in our country,” Merkel said.

The chancellor’s statements come days after the Dutch parliament passed a law banning full veils and masks in public areas. France and several other European countries have similar restrictions in place.
