United States Capitol Police arrested a man outside the Capitol Building on Monday after he allegedly drove to a security barricade while armed with a firearm.
“We just arrested a man at the North Barricade of the U.S. Capitol who had a firearm,” USCP wrote in a statement to NTD. “Firearms are prohibited on Capitol Grounds.”
Social media footage showed the moment the man was taken into custody after surrendering to police outside a gray Ford Bronco.
Authorities declined to identify the individual or disclose further details about the suspect.
“Our investigators are working to learn more about the suspect and why he drove to the U.S. Capitol,” USCP said in its statement.
The North Barricade, located at Delaware and Constitution Avenues, will be closed during its ongoing investigation. Images on social media showed major police activity surrounding the building and the street cordoned off.
The U.S. Capitol, which serves as a working government facility, is one of the nation’s most visited landmarks.
Even if a firearm is legally registered in another state or in the District of Columbia, it remains unlawful to bring that firearm onto Capitol grounds.
Earlier this year, an 18-year-old man from Georgia was arrested after he ran from his vehicle toward the west side of the Capitol Building armed with a shotgun. Carter Camacho was wearing a tactical vest and gloves when he was arrested in February. He also had a Kevlar helmet and gas mask in the vehicle, according to authorities.
Other security incidents at the Capitol in recent years include the arrest of a man in 2023 who was armed with a rifle and spotted in a park near the Senate.
President Donald Trump declared an emergency in the city last August, ordering the deployment of more than 2,000 National Guard members, and thousands of federal law enforcement officers and agents to combat crime in the nation's capital.
