Beijing ‘Unaware’ of South Korean Athlete Held in China

U.S. citizens aren’t the only ones targeted by Chinese law enforcement lately.

Reports say a South Korean soccer player is now detained in China, but Beijing denied having knowledge of it.

The player is named Son Jun-ho. The South Korean embassy in Beijing confirmed that he’s been questioned by authorities while in detention. The embassy said Chinese authorities are investigating Son for unknown reasons.

Son has been playing for a Chinese soccer team since 2021. He’s based in northeastern China’s Shandong province.

The South Korean embassy says a consul has been providing Son with assistance.
