President Joe Biden signed an executive order on gun control, which increases the number of background checks before firearms are sold. That was ahead of his trip to Monterey Park, California, where a shooting left 11 people dead in January. The president of the Crime Prevention Research Center, John Lott, tells NTD that these types of measures would not stop shootings and he claims the real reason behind Biden’s gun-control order is to complete the national gun registry.

Brady, a gun safety group, says California’s gun laws are working as deaths from guns dropped by 55 percent from 1993 to 2017. Furthermore, analysts say stricter gun laws at the national level are needed to protect Californians from shootings. However, Lott argues that this argument isn’t valid in that the state enacted its 3-strike policy in 1994, which led to crime rates dropping dramatically. He says a few years ago, California undid parts of that policy which led to crime rates increasing.
