A 26-year-old Brazilian social media influencer has died after plunging from the 27th floor of a residential skyscraper in Dubai, triggering an outpouring of grief online and a heartfelt public appeal from her mother to stop the spread of rumors surrounding her death.

Kauana Bilhar, who had been living in the United Arab Emirates for approximately two years, fell from the balcony of her room on July 7, according to Brazilian media outlet G1. Her uncle confirmed the circumstances of the fall to the outlet. Local authorities are still investigating the incident, and no official cause has been determined.
Bilhar had amassed more than 20,000 followers on Instagram at the time of her death, where she shared glimpses of her life abroad. Her most recent grid post, published June 25, detailed how she had finally become the owner of a British Shorthair cat after previously being scammed while trying to adopt the breed. "He has brought even more joy to my days," she wrote of the pet.
Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it is "monitoring the case and remains available to the family to provide appropriate consular assistance" through the Brazilian Embassy in Abu Dhabi. Bilhar's mother, Darla Bilhar, has since traveled to Dubai to follow the investigation and arrange for her daughter's remains to be brought home.

'No Mother Should Have to Bury a Daughter,' Mother Says

On July 9, Darla took to Instagram to address the public directly, describing herself as living through the "worst moment of my life.” Speaking in Portuguese in a video post, she said she felt compelled to defend her daughter against online speculation that had erupted in the wake of the tragedy.

"I have to watch my daughter's memory being judged, exposed, disrespected by people who didn't know her story. It's easy to be a judge when the pain belongs to someone else," Darla said in the video, as translated into English. "It's hard to imagine what our family is going through right now."

She urged the public and media outlets worldwide to cover her daughter's death with "responsibility and dignity.”

"To all those spreading rumors or giving opinions without knowing the facts, I ask just one thing — have empathy. Today it's my daughter, tomorrow it could be someone you love," Darla said.

"My daughter deserves respect. Those who really knew her know what kind of person she was, her dreams, her humanity," she added.

Darla also addressed the unique anguish of defending a child who can no longer speak for herself. "No mother should have to bury a daughter, and no mother should have to fight to defend the honor of someone who's already gone while grieving," she said.

Bilhar's death comes amid a series of recent losses among Latin American content creators.

A Costa Rican influencer, Gabriela de los Ángeles Sanarrusia Chavarría, 28, was shot and killed alongside her boyfriend, Jorge Isaac Agüero, 30, in the early morning hours of July 4 when armed men broke into their home in La Cruz, Guanacaste, according to Costa Rican outlet La Nación. Additionally, Brazilian content creator Anna Clara de Souza Rocha, 27, died June 21 after losing control of her vehicle, which overturned in Volta Redonda in Rio de Janeiro state, according to Brazilian outlet G1.

The investigation into Bilhar's death in Dubai remains open.
