Ed Sheeran secretly got married to his childhood sweetheart, Cherry Seaborn, just days before Christmas in 2018.
The two hosted their wedding at Sheeran’s country estate in Suffolk, and according to the interview the Sun conducted with a source close to the singer, it was a very small ceremony, with Sheeran’s oldest school friends, family, and the priest.
“There were only 40 people—so no Taylor Swift, record company executives or any royals or pop star pals. He wanted no fuss and he wanted it to be something entirely for them—just a tiny winter wedding,” the source said.
The source added that Sheeran and Seaborn didn’t want to make a big deal out of it. Seaborn just wanted to get it out of the way without any problems. And since Sheeran doesn’t like to do things publicly, it seemed like the perfect accommodation.
“It’s amazing that he’s the biggest pop star in the world but he was just able to quietly slide off and wed,” said the source.
According to the Sun, Sheeran also wanted to build a private Saxon-styled wedding chapel on his mansion property, but the Suffolk Coastal District Council denied his permit to do so, on the reason that it would have “unsatisfactory visual impacts” on his property, and cause confusion as people might be under the impression that it’s a second village church.
Just after the turn of the year in 2018, Sheeran announced he had proposed to Seaborn on Instagram.
“Got myself a fiancé just before new year. We are very happy and in love, and our cats are chuffed as well,” he wrote.
The Couple
Sheeran and Seaborn met in Thomas Mills High School in Framlingham, Suffolk. After the completion of their secondary school, the pair parted ways, with Seaborn attending Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, according to the Sun.
In 2015, they began officially dating, first starting off with a long-distance relationship with Seaborn in the United States, and Sheeran in the U.K. However, after their relationship became serious, Seaborn packed up her things from the United States and moved back to the U.K. to be closer to Sheeran. She transferred her job at a top accounting firm from New York to London.
Sheeran spent 2016 traveling, taking a break from music. During that time, he said he finally had the chance to fall in love properly.
“‘I’ve always got into relationships very passionately—I’m a redhead and also Irish,” he said to Zane Lowe on Beats 1.
In addition to falling in love, he also wanted to start a family.
“I’m ready, let’s go—tour bus babies, little fat, chubby babies that just walk around,” Sheeran said.
And at the end of 2017, he finally proposed to her.
Ever since he proposed, both Sheeran and Seaborn have been wearing engagement rings that Seaborn fashioned out of silver clay—to avoid people knowing when he was going to get married.
“We were both kind of wearing rings. It also means that nobody will know when we have got married.”
