Former DEA Special Operations: Fentanyl Changes Game; It’s Not a Drug, It’s Poison

Roughly 100,000 people in the United States will likely die this year from a drug overdose—and fentanyl will be the dominant culprit.

Derek Maltz, former head of Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Special Operations, spent 28 years in drug law enforcement and says fentanyl changes the game. Why? Because it’s so lethal, users often don’t know they’re ingesting it, and dealers can sell it online, even targeting children.

Given the current drug crisis, some argue that the only way to defeat organized crime is through legalizing and regulating drugs. Maltz says that won’t help and cartels won’t give up—they’ll simply undercut the legal market. Instead, he offers his own suggestions on what’s needed to win the drug war.
