A small group of metals are critical to almost every key area of modern life—including smartphones, computers, cars, planes, and even weapons. The materials are extracted from rare earths, and most of the manufacturing process for them runs through one single country: China. NTD spoke to Ann Bridges, Silicon Valley author, about how we came to rely on this country.
