Heavy rain and hail hit Spain’s southern city of Malaga on Sunday (February 19) causing floods and damage to the streets.

The rains flooded homes, garages, buildings, blocked streets and caused highways to overflow.

Emergency services said they responded to more than 200 incidents in Malaga on Sunday morning.

On Saturday (February 18), Spain’s meteorological service changed its “yellow alert” indicating risk, to an “orange alert” indicating “important risk”.

When heavy rains and hail hit the coast, the weather office changed the warning level to the highest “extreme risk”. The yellow alert will remain in place all Sunday.

Malaga’s tourism councilor Julio Andrade urged calm and requested people to stay at home.

Some parts of Malaga registered up to 130 liter of water per square metre (3 gal. per sq. ft.)
