Kate Spade’s husband has spoken out for the first time after his wife was found dead in an apparent suicide.
In a statement on June 6, Andy Spade addressed his wife’s depression and used the opportunity to set the record straight on some reports regarding his marriage.
“Kate was the most beautiful woman in the world. She was the kindest person I’ve ever known and my best friend for 35 years. My daughter and I are devastated by her loss, and can’t even begin to fathom life without her,” the statement read, reported The New York Times.
“We are deeply heartbroken and miss her already.”
Andy said Kate had been actively seeking help from doctors to treat her depression and anxiety for the last five years. He revealed that the night before her death, there was no indication that something was wrong.
“We were in touch with her the night before and she sounded happy. There was no indication and no warning that she would do this. It was a complete shock. And it clearly wasn’t her. There were personal demons she was battling,” the statement said.
He also revealed that for the past 10 months, the couple had been living separately but within a few blocks of each other. He said that their daughter, Frances Beatrix, who is known as Bea, was living with both parents and saw them or spoke with them every day.
“We ate many meals together as a family and continued to vacation together as a family. Our daughter was our priority,” the statement continued.
He confirmed that they were not legally separated and had not even discussed divorce.
“We were best friends trying to work through our problems in the best way we knew how. We were together for 35 years. We loved each other very much and simply needed a break,” the statement said.
According to the Associated Press, the housekeeper discovered Kate’s body hanging in her bedroom at around 10 a.m. in her apartment. They discovered a note which pointed to “a tragic suicide.”
Authorities did not reveal what was in the note apart from that it included a message to Kate’s 13-year-old daughter.
Police confirmed that her husband was in the apartment at the time but the couple’s daughter was at school.
