Meijer is temporarily reducing prices on more than 1,000 grocery and household products. The Midwest grocery chain is offering discounts on meat, produce, cereal, and other everyday goods, according to the company.
Discounted items include Meijer pork shoulder roast for $1.79 per pound, down from $2.99, and family packs of chicken drumsticks for 99 cents per pound, down from $1.39.
Meijer also cut the price of whole seedless watermelons from $8.99 to $4.99, 16-ounce packages of strawberries from $2.99 to $2.50, and 18 mega rolls of its toilet paper from $13.99 to $10.49.
Twelve-ounce boxes of Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes are $2.99, down from $4.29, while 24-ounce jars of Vlasic pickles are $2.50, down from $3.49.
Fruit and vegetable prices recorded the largest annual increase among the major grocery categories at 5.3 percent, while prices for meat, poultry, fish and eggs rose 2.6 percent.
Dairy prices rose 1.2 percent in June, while egg prices increased 4.3 percent during the month. The cost of eating out climbed 3.4 percent over the year, outpacing the 2.7 percent annual increase in grocery prices, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins praised Meijer's initiative and said it would help lower food prices for American families.
The White House described the Meijer promotion as part of a broader trend among grocery chains, noting that Walmart and Sam’s Club also recently announced price cuts.
Meijer said the promotion runs through Sept. 8, meaning it is not a permanent companywide reduction. The retailer operates more than 500 supercenters, grocery stores, neighborhood markets and express locations across the Midwest, according to the company.
Discounted prices will appear automatically on store shelves, Meijer.com, and the company’s app, Meijer said.
