Byrne often portrayed military officers, authority figures, and villains across film, television, and theater. His best-known film role came in 1989 as SS Colonel Ernst Vogel, one of the main antagonists opposite Harrison Ford in "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade."
In 2002, he portrayed newspaper editor Horace Greeley in "Gangs of New York." Byrne also played the elderly Gellert Grindelwald in 2010's "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1."
In addition to film, Byrne maintained an extensive television career that included roles in "Smiley's People," "The Devil's Crown," and ITV's long-running soap "Coronation Street," where he portrayed businessman Ted Page from 2008 to 2010.
The London-born actor trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama before beginning his professional career with the Arena Theatre Company in 1962. During a tour in Ireland, he met Carole Nimmons, whom he married in 1965.
Byrne later joined the National Theatre under the direction of Laurence Olivier at the Old Vic and went on to perform with the Royal Exchange, London's West End, and the Theatre Royal Bath. His final stage appearance came in 2018 in a revival of "Mary Stuart" at the Almeida Theatre in London.
Throughout his career, Byrne was known for his commanding screen presence and frequently portrayed German military officers in wartime films, including "The Eagle Has Landed," "A Bridge Too Far," and "Force 10 from Navarone."
Byrne is survived by his former wife, Carole Nimmons, who cared for him toward the end of his life; his daughters, Tara and Bryony; and his grandchildren, Tom, Chloe, and Jasmine, according to his obituary in The Guardian.
