California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Monday said the Department of Justice is investigating him and his wife.

Newsom, in a video shared to social media, said federal agents have contacted family friends and former employees in recent days in an effort to find a crime that he and his wife may have committed.
“They’re demanding records, they’re abusing the grand jury process, digging through years and years of random documents,” Newsom said. “Donald Trump isn’t just coming after me because of my mean tweets, he’s coming after me because I’m considering running for president.”

Newsom, who is widely seen as a leading figure within the Democratic Party and a potential presidential contender, has not formally announced a presidential campaign.

The DOJ has not publicly confirmed Newsom's characterization of the investigation. NTD reached out to the DOJ seeking confirmation about the investigations and further comment on Newsom’s remarks, but did not receive a response by publication. In an emailed response, the White House referred NTD to the DOJ for comment.

Trump and Newsom have a long history of trading criticisms and political attacks against one another. The two political rivals have clashed on major issues including climate change, the deployment of National Guard troops to the state last summer, and the state's wildfire management.

Trump said in 2025 that he would support Newsom's arrest for alleged obstruction of federal immigration enforcement in California.

In January, the president criticized Newsom’s handling of fraud in California.

On Truth Social, Trump posted about the fraud discovered in the hospice care industry and called California under Newsom “more corrupt than Minnesota, if that’s possible???”

“The Fraud Investigation of California has begun,” Trump posted.

Speaking directly to Trump in the video on Monday, Newsom said he wouldn’t back down from defending himself and his wife.

"You can subpoena my records. You can investigate me. You can harass me. Put my name on every and any enemy’s list you have, but leave my wife and family out of your personal vendetta,” the governor said.
