Joe Thornton has announced his retirement after joining the NHL in 1997.
He was the first overall pick in 1997 with the second overall pick being Patrick Marleau.
Thornton and Marleau were teammates when Jumbo Joe Thornton was traded to San Jose in 2005.
He has played for the Boston Bruins, San Jose Sharks, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Florida Panthers.
Thornton is ranked 6th in all-time games played, he was a 6 time All-star
