A collision between a commercial barge and a small sailing vessel during a youth sailing program resulted in the deaths of two children and left two others fighting for their lives, the U.S. Coast Guard said Monday.

The crash took place in Biscayne Bay, the waterway that separates Miami from Miami Beach, when a group from a children's sailing camp found themselves in the path of a barge that struck and sank their boat.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Nicholas Strasburg, a Coast Guard spokesperson, said first responders managed to pull all six occupants from the water following the crash. The group consisted of one adult supervisor and five children participating in the Miami Yacht Club's sailing program.

Four of the children required immediate hospitalization, where two were pronounced dead upon arrival, according to Strasburg. The remaining two children remain hospitalized in critical condition

The other two occupants of the small boat were reported in good condition.

The tragedy comes during what should have been a celebratory end to the sailing camp, as the group was in the final week of the program designed for children between the ages of 7 and 15, according to the Miami Yacht Club.

"The entire MYC family is devastated by this terrible tragedy," said Emily Copeland, the commodore of the yacht club, in a statement.

Biscayne Bay is known for being a popular boating area dotted with small islands, including the exclusive Star Island, known for its luxury waterfront properties. Following the crash, the sailboat became trapped beneath the barge and remained submerged in the bay waters.

Captain Frank Florio, who leads the Coast Guard's Miami sector operations, said an investigation is underway.

"The Coast Guard will conduct a thorough investigation," Florio stated. "We remain steadfast in our commitment to accountability, improvement, and the shared responsibility of ensuring safety at sea."

Television news footage from the scene showed emergency responders, including rescue crews equipped with scuba diving equipment, searching around the barge where the sailboat sank.

According to Coast Guard <a href="https://www.uscgboating.org/library/accident-statistics/Recreational-Boating-Statistics-2024.pdf">statistics</a>, more than 550 individuals lost their lives in recreational boating accidents throughout the United States last year. Vessel-to-vessel collisions accounted for a relatively small portion of these, with 43 deaths attributed to boats crashing into each other.

This tragedy follows another serious <a href="https://www.ntd.com/fiery-boat-explosion-near-fort-lauderdale-hospitalizes-11-on-memorial-day_1069897.html">boating incident</a> that occurred on Memorial Day in South Florida waters. A boat explosion along the Intracoastal Waterway near Fort Lauderdale resulted in 11 people being hospitalized, with several victims suffering severe burns.

The Fort Lauderdale incident took place around 5:45 p.m. on Memorial Day when a boat with 13 people suddenly burst into flames near a popular sandbar, according to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue spokesperson Frank Guzman.

The explosion forced some passengers into the water, where nearby boaters immediately helped rescue them.

Among those injured in the Fort Lauderdale explosion were two children who sustained extensive burns, according to Guzman. Ten of the 11 hospitalized victims required transfer to a specialized burn treatment facility at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, while one person was released from medical care the same day.
