A fire broke out Thursday aboard the U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford while it was operating in the Red Sea, injuring two sailors but leaving the carrier fully operational, the Navy <a href="https://x.com/US5thFleet/status/2032102452145664083?s=20">said</a>.

U.S. Naval Forces Central Command and the U.S. Fifth Fleet said in a March 12 social media post that the fire started in the ship’s laundry spaces.

“On March 12, USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) experienced a fire that originated in the ship’s main laundry spaces,” the command wrote. “The cause of the fire was not combat-related and is contained.”

The carrier’s propulsion systems were unaffected, and the ship remains fully operational, officials said. However, there were injuries from the fire.

“Two Sailors are currently receiving medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries and are in stable condition,” the command said.

The carrier is deployed as part of the Ford Carrier Strike Group and is operating in the Red Sea in support of Operation Epic Fury, the Navy stated.

Open satellite imagery and ship-tracking data <a href="https://x.com/MT_Anderson/status/2032090797034664181?s=20">shared online</a> indicated that the strike group was operating off the coast of Al Wajh, Saudi Arabia, earlier this week.

Maritime observer MT Anderson wrote March 11 that the strike group’s defensive formation appeared to be expanding as more escorts joined the carrier.

“Carrier Strike Group 12 is actively building up its combat power in the Red Sea,” Anderson wrote in a social media post analyzing satellite imagery from the United States Geological Survey Landsat Program. Satellite imagery showed the carrier operating with several escort ships and a replenishment oiler as the group formed up in the region.

The carrier has been deployed since June 2025, with its deployment extended several times during operations in the Middle East.

If the ship remains deployed into mid-April, it could surpass the modern U.S. Navy record for the longest post-Vietnam aircraft carrier deployment, previously set by the USS Abraham Lincoln in 2020, <a href="https://news.usni.org/2026/03/12/carrier-uss-gerald-r-ford-suffers-fire">according</a> to the U.S. Naval Institute.

Navy officials said additional details about the fire investigation may be released later. “Additional information will be provided when available,” according to the Navy.

The USS Gerald R. Ford is the lead ship of the Navy's newest class of aircraft carriers. It was commissioned in July 2017.

The carrier features the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) instead of traditional steam catapults, Advanced Arresting Gear, Dual Band Radar, and upgraded electrical power generation to support future technologies, such as laser weapons. It is considered the most technologically <a href="https://www.airlant.usff.navy.mil/cvn78/">advanced aircraft carrier</a> in the U.S. fleet.
