About 5 million above-ground swimming pools are being recalled across the United States after at least nine children under the age of 4 drowned by climbing into the pools using straps located on the outside.

The recall involves pools 48 inches tall or higher made by Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup. These large backyard pools use compression straps that wrap around the outside of the pool to help support the structure. However, these straps can act as footholds, allowing small children to climb into the pool—even when the ladder is removed.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (<a href="https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2025/Bestway-Intex-and-Polygroup-Recall-Certain-Above-Ground-Pools-48-Inches-and-Taller-Due-to-Drowning-Hazard-Nine-Deaths-Reported-Five-Million-Pools-Sold-Since-2002#:~:text=The%20recalled%20above%2Dground%20pools,266%2C000%20were%20sold%20in%20Canada">CPSC</a>), the drownings occurred between 2007 and 2022 in California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Missouri. All victims were children between 22 months and 3 years old.

The CPSC also received reports of three additional incidents in 2011 and 2012 where children climbed the straps but were rescued in time.

The recalled pools were manufactured in China and sold under various brand names, including Bestway Power Steel, Coleman, Intex Prism Frame, Polygroup Summer Waves, and Funsicle.

They’ve been available since 2002 at major retailers such as Walmart, Target, Sears, Lowe’s, Kmart, Toys “R” Us, Sam’s Club, The Home Depot, Big Lots, Costco, and BJ’s, as well as online through Amazon.com, Wayfair.com, and the Bestway, Intex, Funsicle, and Summer Waves websites. Prices ranged from $400 to over $1,000. Approximately 266,000 units were also sold in Canada.

The CPSC urges consumers to stop using the pools immediately if they feature the recalled strap design. A free repair kit is available from the manufacturers, which includes a rope to replace the strap and prevent the foothold hazard. Once installed, consumers should cut and remove the original strap.

“Until the repair is complete, keep children away from the pool or drain the water completely,” the CPSC said in a <a href="https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2025/Endless-Pools-Recalls-Manual-Retractable-Pool-Covers-Due-to-Drowning-and-Entrapment-Hazards-Risk-of-Serious-Injury-and-Death">statement</a>.

<h2><strong>Pool Safety Tips</strong></h2>
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission  also recommends www.PoolSafely.gov for free safety resources. Key safety steps <a href="https://www.poolsafely.gov/parents/safety-tips/">include</a> active, undistracted adult supervision, teaching children how to swim, and making sure they stay away from pool drains and suction outlets.

Pools and spas should always have federally compliant drain covers to prevent dangerous entrapment incidents, and adults should be trained in CPR to respond quickly in an emergency.

Experts also recommend installing four-foot fencing with self-closing, self-latching gates, using door alarms, and securing pools with covers when not in use.
