The U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point have ended their use of race, ethnicity, and sex as factors in admissions decisions, according to <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.cod.239475/gov.uscourts.cod.239475.23.0.pdf">court</a> <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.nysd.606600/gov.uscourts.nysd.606600.128.0.pdf">filings</a> submitted on Friday. The move reflects a shift under the Trump administration’s directives to dismantle diversity-focused policies across the military.

Before the 2025 legal case, the Air Force Academy’s admissions policy considered race, ethnicity, geography, and gender—among other factors—aiming to “promote diversity and reflect the nation's demographics in its officer corps.”

The Air Force <a href="https://www.rand.org/content/dam/rand/pubs/tools/TL100/TL189/RAND_TL189.pdf">began</a> implementing diversity polices as early as 2012, according to RAND, a global policy think tank.

Earlier policies aligned with efforts to address the underrepresentation of African Americans and Hispanics in the Air Force. A 2014 RAND study <a href="https://www.rand.org/pubs/research_reports/RR495.html">found</a> that these groups were much less likely to meet rigorous admission requirements, such as holding a college degree.

In the recent motion filed in the U.S. District Court of Colorado, federal attorneys wrote that the Air Force Academy “no longer permits any consideration of race, ethnicity, or sex in the admissions process,” adding that the changes “bear directly on this litigation.”

The policy overhaul follows President Donald Trump’s Executive Order 14185, Restoring America’s Fighting Force, which mandates that no U.S. military branch may consider race or sex when deciding organizational composition or academic admissions.

“The Department of Defense must train all service members to treat others with dignity and respect regardless of background or beliefs—not divide them by race or sex,” the <a href="https://www.federalregister.gov/documents/2025/02/03/2025-02181/restoring-americas-fighting-force">order</a> states.

West Point—located north of New York City—stated that it has taken all necessary steps to comply with the president's orders and agency policy memoranda to ensure that race and ethnicity are no longer factors in admissions.

Similarly, acting Assistant Air Force Secretary Gwendolyn R. DeFilippi said that “effective immediately, the Department will no longer use quotas, objectives, or goals based on sex, race, or ethnicity for organizational composition, academic admission, career fields, or class composition,” quoted in the court motion.

The lawsuit, <a href="https://studentsforfairadmissions.org/students-for-fair-admissions-files-lawsuit-challenging-racial-and-ethnic-admissions-policies-at-u-s-air-force-academy/">brought</a> by Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA) in December 2024, challenged the Academy’s admissions practices as unconstitutional under the Fifth Amendment’s equal protection component. SFFA argued that even if such considerations were used with good intentions, “classifying applicants based on race is unjust, polarizing, and unlawful.”

“Over the past few decades, the Air Force Academy and our other military academies have strayed from their former colorblind, merit-based admissions policies and now focus on race and ethnicity—factors that do not contribute to the qualifications of applicants,” said Edward Blum, president of SFFA, when announcing the lawsuit.

The court motion regarding the Air Force Academy further stated, “All references to DEI, Diversity and Inclusion, or any sex/race/ethnicity-based goals in the accessions or admissions context have been deleted or nullified.”

Trump’s executive order is part of a broader rollback of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programs within the military. In public remarks earlier this year, Trump criticized such initiatives as “woke nonsense that weakens our military’s readiness.”

SFFA referenced its 2023 Supreme Court victory, which struck down race-conscious admissions policies at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina. Although that ruling did not apply to military academies, the group soon filed similar cases against West Point, the Naval Academy, and the Air Force Academy, arguing that no public institution should consider race in admissions.

The U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis also announced earlier this year that it had eliminated race, ethnicity, and sex as considerations in its admissions process. In a policy memo issued in February 2025, Superintendent Vice Admiral Yvette Davids confirmed compliance with the executive order. That change came just months after a federal judge had allowed the Naval Academy’s previous policy to remain in place, citing the importance of diversity to military strength.
