The man accused of killing popular activist Charlie Kirk appeared in court for the first time on Thursday.

Tyler Robinson, 22, attended a hearing in the high-profile criminal case at the court in Provo, Utah.

Robinson arrived with restraints on his wrists and ankles, wearing a dress shirt, tie, and slacks. He also smiled at family members who were sitting in the front row of the courtroom, including his parents and brother. His mother appeared emotional, tearing up and wiping her eyes with a tissue.

The defendant has been accused of opening fire on Kirk as he was speaking to students at the University of Utah on Sept. 10.

Kirk was the founder of conservative youth organization Turning Point USA and was well-known for visiting college campuses to debate students on hot-button issues.

Judge Tony Graf is weighing whether to allow media access in the courtroom during Thursday's hearing. Criminal cases in the United States have long been open to the public to ensure a fair trial and keep the public informed.

Graf removed the media from the court for a short period of time as he heard arguments from both sides.

Robinson's legal team requested to ban cameras in court, citing pretrial publicity that has reached as far as the White House. President Donald Trump weighed in on the case shortly after Robinson was arrested, saying he "hopes" that Robinson gets the death penalty.

Erika Kirk, Charlie's widow, believes that cameras should be allowed in the court.

"There were cameras all over my husband when he was murdered," she said during an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/shorts/9p_LdZk65vE">interview with Fox News</a>. "There have been cameras all over my friends and family mourning. There have been cameras all over me, analyzing my every move, analyzing my every smile, my every tear. We deserve to have cameras in there. Why not be transparent? There's nothing to hide. I know there's not because I see what the case is built on. Let everyone see what true evil is."

The assassination of the popular conservative activist sparked nationwide attention.

The judge has previously acknowledged that the case has attracted “extraordinary” public interest.

Graf has already made some allowances to protect the defendant's presumption of innocence before a trial. He allowed Robinson to wear street clothes in court instead of jail clothing. But he also said the defendant must be physically restrained in court due to security concerns. He also banned the media from filming Robinson's restraints after his defense lawyers argued widespread images of him shackled could prejudice the jury.
