American academic Dennis Coyle arrived at a U.S. base in Texas after being held by the Taliban for over a year. He was greeted by loved ones at Joint Base San Antonio following his release from detention.

Afghan authorities said he was freed in Kabul during the Eid al-Fitr holiday after an appeal. Coyle had been detained since January 2025 on allegations of violating local laws in Afghanistan.

Dennis Coyle’s sister said she was overjoyed at his return after 422 days in captivity.
