Satellite images captured a submarine in a Shanghai shipyard in May. Analysts told the South China Morning Post that this vessel appears to be a new design.

How is it different from China’s most powerful nuclear attack submarine, Type 093, that’s in service?

Analysts say the new submarine seems over 30 feet longer than Type 093. It has a much smaller sail, which means it would run into less resistance moving through water, so its operation could be quieter, though that would also depend on other factors, such as coatings and other stealth technologies.
