From inside the U.S. market, the logic makes sense: build what sells and stick with the vehicles that make the most money. But the competitive gap with China runs on more than the price of any single car, making the global contest harder to read from the U.S. market alone.

Stephen Ezell, executive vice president for Global Innovation Policy at ITIF, has studied how the global auto industry reached this point. He joins us to explain how far a U.S.-focused strategy can carry the Big Three as Chinese automakers keep gaining ground abroad.
