Two additional suspects have been taken into custody in connection with a violent assault on a Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) employee that triggered a federal law enforcement response in the nation's capital.

Anthony Taylor, 18, and Laurence Cotton-Powell, 19, were apprehended last week for their alleged roles in the Aug. 3 attack on Edward Coristine, according to U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro.

The 19-year-old victim, who works for the Trump administration and goes by the nickname "Big Balls," had intervened when a group of teenagers attempted to carjack a woman in Washington's Logan Circle neighborhood.

"This case underscores the escalating challenges that we face in confronting crime in Washington, D.C.," Pirro said at a news conference on Monday.

The <a href="https://www.ntd.com/2-juveniles-arrested-in-bloody-beating-of-doge-member-in-washington_1083340.html">incident</a> occurred around 3 a.m. when Coristine was escorting the woman to her vehicle in the 1400 block of northwest Swann Street, according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). A group of teenagers approached the pair, demanded the vehicle, then repeatedly punched and kicked Coristine. The attackers fled after spotting a nearby police officer.

According to Pirro, Cotton-Powell and Taylor are also suspected of attacking and robbing another man at a gas station shortly before assaulting Coristine. Both suspects now face charges in D.C. Superior Court, including attempted unarmed carjacking, robbery, and assault with intent to commit a robbery. Cotton-Powell was arrested last Thursday, while Taylor was taken into custody the following day.

The attack gained national attention after President Donald Trump shared a <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114977985620971126">photo</a> on social media showing the bloodied victim following the assault. The incident became a key factor in the White House's decision to deploy additional federal agents and National Guard members throughout Washington.
<h2>Judge Grants Probation</h2>
Two 15-year-old suspects from Maryland had previously been arrested, charged, and convicted in the case. The teenagers were arrested at the scene as they attempted to leave the area. Last Tuesday, a federal judge sentenced both juveniles to probation after they entered guilty pleas.

The sentencing drew criticism from Trump, who called it "terrible" and said the judge should be "ashamed of himself”.

The president has been vocal about what he views as insufficient penalties for juvenile offenders in the District of Columbia. Following the attack, Trump called for changes to local laws to allow minors as young as 14 to be prosecuted as adults.

"They are not afraid of Law Enforcement because they know nothing ever happens to them, but it's going to happen now!" the president <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114977985620971126">wrote</a> on Truth Social after the attack occurred. "The Law in D.C. must be changed to prosecute these 'minors' as adults, and lock them up for a long time, starting at age 14. The most recent victim was beaten mercilessly by local thugs."

Elon Musk, who briefly led DOGE, confirmed details of the attack on X. He described Coristine's actions as heroic, stating the employee saved the woman from assault.

"A [DOGE] team member saw what was happening, ran to defend her and was severely beaten to the point of concussion, but he saved her," Musk <a href="https://x.com/elonmusk/status/1952836498971344926?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1952836498971344926%7Ctwgr%5E545595fa488c1176f90d4a281be0a3956b19cc6c%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.infowars.com%2Fposts%2Fbig-balls-attacked-doge-team-member-beaten-bloody-by-mob-of-teen-thugs-trump-calls-to-federalize-d-c-following-assault">wrote</a> in a post at the time on X.

Both Trump and Musk have suggested placing Washington under federal control in response to crime concerns. Musk agreed with the president that it is "time to federalize DC”.

The case remains under investigation by the MPD's carjacking task force.

Washington has seen other high-profile violent incidents this year. In June, congressional intern Eric Tarpinian-Jachym was fatally shot in northwestern Washington after being caught in crossfire between two groups. The young intern worked for Rep. Ron Estes (R-Kan.).

"Eric's life was tragically cut short by a senseless act of violence in our nation's capital," the congressman said. "Eric was an innocent bystander who was gunned down as he walked down the street less than one mile from the White House."

According to data collected by MPD, total violent crime in the District of Columbia decreased 35 percent in 2024 compared to 2023, reaching a 30-year record low. The latest numbers show homicides dropped 32 percent, robberies declined 39 percent, and armed carjackings decreased 53 percent when compared with 2023 levels. Preliminary <a href="https://mpdc.dc.gov/dailycrime">2025 data</a> shows continued declines, with violent crime down another 26 percent year-to-date.
