Amid America’s <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2024/p0912-adult-obesity.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">obesity epidemic</a>, a drug that can commonly lower body weight by <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33567185/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">15 percent</a> is sure to be welcomed with open arms.

Accordingly, the weight-loss drug Ozempic hit <a href="https://www.biospace.com/business/10-best-selling-drugs-of-2024-rake-in-billions-amid-exclusivity-threats" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">$16.9 billion</a> in sales in 2024, making it the world’s second-best-selling drug.

However, the best-selling author of “The Diabetes Code,” Dr. Jason Fung M.D., is concerned by how readily Ozempic is being dispensed to people it may be unsuitable for.

Fung joins “Vital Signs with Brendon Fallon” to explain why and when he prescribes Ozempic as a nephrologist (i.e., a kidney health specialist), and how Ozempic compares to low-carb dieting and fasting in terms of its risks and benefits.

“You can look online and there's a lot of pictures … of celebrities, and they all have this sort of gaunt ‘Ozempic face,’ which is the loss of subcutaneous fat,” he says.

“Subcutaneous fat … is the fat underneath the skin, and that’s not that dangerous … [it’s] contained within the fat cell where it’s supposed to be,” he adds.

Is Ozempic more likely to cause sagging skin than low-carb dieting or fasting would? Is it more likely to cause muscle loss?

Ozempic largely affects the GLP-1 satiety hormone, says Fung, suppressing appetite.

“But remember that Ozempic doesn't raise your GLP-1 levels to a normal physiologic level.”

“It's a super-physiological stimulus,” he says, suggesting the drug suppresses appetite to a level well beyond what nature intended.

On “Vital Signs,” Fung reveals how well weight loss is sustained after stopping Ozempic, and also which accompanying diet and lifestyle changes optimize its results.
