U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is currently on a multi-country tour of the Middle East with the aim of preventing the further escalation of conflicts, and particularly between Israel and Hezbollah.

NTD spoke to David Wurmser, an analyst for Middle East affairs at the Center for Security Policy, to find out more about Mr. Blinken's aims on the trip and whether they can be achieved. He suggests that the U.S. strategy is likely to involve encouraging Israel to shift its focus from the northern border with Lebanon to Gaza, and reducing the pace of activities there—in the hope of reaching a ceasefire.

"Does America really have the leverage over Israel in the long run? Certainly, they have a lot of leverage. But I'm not sure that they really have the leverage right now to get the goals that Blinken is seeking," said Mr. Wurmser.

"So I don't see his trip as a success. I don't think he has sufficient gravity to get Israel to do what Israel believes, very much, is against its interests at this point."
