Boeing and the U.S. Department of Justice are seeking a deal that would allow the aircraft manufacturer to avoid criminal prosecution over two deadly 737 Max crashes that killed 346 people, but the agreement is facing opposition from families of the victims.

The proposed agreement, now awaiting approval from a federal judge in Texas, would spare Boeing from being branded a convicted felon and remove the requirement for independent oversight previously included in its earlier plea deal.

Under the deal, Boeing would pay $1.1 billion, covering a fine, compensation for victims’ families, and investments in improved safety programs. However, some relatives of crash victims argue the proposed resolution is not in the public interest and say its terms are unenforceable.
