The trees date back to a 1912 gift from Japan, symbolizing long-standing friendship between the two nations. More than 3,000 cherry trees were planted around the basin and nearby waterfront, becoming a key landmark.

Japan is expected to gift 250 new trees to mark the United States’ 250th anniversary.
