A 2024 study found that more than 60 percent of China's human albumin is imported, and much of that imported supply relies on plasma collected in the United States.

Blood plasma is the liquid part of your blood. It carries important nutrients and proteins—and doctors use donated plasma to help patients stop serious bleeding and treat certain blood disorders.

The United States supplies roughly 70 percent of the world's plasma, helped by a large network of collection centers and paid donors.

Meanwhile, China has struggled to collect enough plasma domestically because of strict regulations.

Those rules date back to a devastating HIV outbreak in China during the 1990s.

Unsafe plasma collection practices infected tens of thousands of people, prompting Beijing to impose tighter controls.

Today, China is estimated to face a yearly plasma shortage of around six thousand tons.

Beijing is trying to open more collection centers and develop alternative sources.

But closing the gap will take time, leaving China dependent on American supplies for now.

And as U.S.-China trade tensions continue, that dependence could become trade leverage for Washington.

The issue also highlights a broader challenge for Beijing—reducing its reliance on foreign supplies, similar to its efforts to restrict rare earth mineral exports.
