China has sent warships to conduct drills in the western Pacific. This comes as Japan is, for the first time, fully participating in a joint drill with the United States and the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Taiwan on April 20 said it detected a Chinese aircraft carrier sailing through the Taiwan Strait.

The strait is a sensitive waterway separating the island from mainland China. It’s been over four months since China last sent an aircraft carrier through the Taiwan Strait.

Beijing's moves come as tens of thousands of U.S. and Philippine troops kick off large-scale combat drills. The exercises are among the largest of their kind, and seen as a response to Beijing’s growing aggression in the region.
