Kang Yi, head of China’s National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), announced on Jan. 19, that China’s gross domestic product (GDP) reached 140.19 trillion yuan (approximately US$19.4 trillion) in 2025, representing year-over-year growth of 5 percent in inflation-adjusted terms. It marked the third consecutive year that the Chinese regime had set—and claimed to meet—an annual growth target of around 5 percent.

Independent analysts dispute the official figure. The U.S.-based "Rhodium Group" estimates China’s real growth closer to 2.5 to 3 percent, while one prominent Chinese economist puts it even lower.

Gao Shanwen, former chief economist at SDIC Securities in Hong Kong, said China’s actual growth may be around 2 percent. Sina News in China reported that he left his post after the remarks.
