Clinicians now have a diagnostic code to reference for digestive problems that largely impact chronic marijuana users.

Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS) is known as R11.16 in the World Health Organization (WHO)’s International Classification of Diseases manual.

Since the classification was implemented, a University of Washington press release announced that medical providers can use it to identify the condition with one billing code instead of describing it with two or three less specific codes.

“It gives more clarity to all the physicians that are seeing these types of patients,” internal medicine physician and Kazmira Therapeutics medical advisor Dr. Gautham Oroskar told NTD. “The patient won’t get lost in a general nausea or vomiting diagnosis bucket. We get to gather data surrounding their demographic and other details.”

The numeric indicator in a patient’s medical records can also be used to establish a pattern that can help with future visits for the same condition.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3847982/">defines</a> CHS as being associated with uncontrollable nausea and vomiting for which patients often seek emergency room care for relief.

Diagnosing CHS with a code excites addiction specialists like Full Life Comprehensive Care psychotherapist John Puls because it can compel third-party payer insurance companies to offer coverage for CHS-related medical and psychiatric treatment.

“It is incredibly important to have a diagnosis code for CHS,” Puls told NTD. “CHS was largely unrecognized and many people would enter into emergency rooms with the condition without receiving diagnosis because of lack of education and proper protocol.”

The recreational use of cannabis became legal in Colorado in 2012 by a voter-approved amendment and legal retail sales were legalized statewide in 2014. Since then, many other states have followed suit. According to <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/cannabis/about/state-medical-cannabis-laws.html">federal reports</a>, nearly half of all states have legalized the use of marijuana in some manner.

What is causing CHS among users, according to Puls, is cannabis that has more than 90 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is a psychoactive compound in the plant that creates the intoxication experience.

“Today’s cannabis products—especially concentrates and vapes—often have much higher THC levels than products from a decade or two ago,” Puls added.

Oroskar warns cannabis users that there are many misconceptions about the drug, including that it is a treatment for nausea.

“That isn't true,” Oroskar added. “Another misconception is that people think that if they stop using marijuana after a week, their symptoms will go away. The THC will actually accumulate in the body's fat and take four to six weeks.”
